'I don't have anywhere to go!' - Hundreds join memorial march to honour victims of devastating flood, urge govt assistance

"Hundreds of people joined a memorial march in Nigeria's Mokwa on Friday to honour the victims of the devastating flood that took the lives of about 500 people last year and call on urgent government assistance to avoid a recurrence of the tragedy. Footage shows protesters chanting slogans and waving signs with such messages as 'Mokwa flood victims need shelter' as they marched through the streets. The harrowing flood aftermath of washed-away or damaged residential houses and roads can also be seen. "There's no way I can recover from the flood one year after. That's my house completely washed up, and I paid a year's rent, which has expired," flood victim Abubakar Dahiru stated. "I don't have anywhere to go, so I rebuilt and roofed just three rooms which my family and I, comprising over 20 members of the household, now live in. I couldn't move to another place because the flood washed away all my savings and grains worth millions of naira," another flood victim, Adamu Dangwari, shared. The May 2025 flood in Mokwa has become one of the deadliest in the country's recent history, killing about 500 people and at least 200 injured, while over 600 remain missing."
