'Build constructive, strategic, stable relationship' - Beijing advises US after Hegseth's remarks expressing 'alarm' over China's military buildup at Singapore defence summit

"China advised the US to pursue a 'constructive, strategic, stable relationship' in a rebuttal to Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth's remarks expressing 'alarm' over Beijing's military buildup. This was said by the Major General Meng Xiangqing of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday. "The stability of China-US relations not only benefits the people of both countries, but also contributes to regional stability and world peace," Major General said. "We also look forward to China and the US working toward a common goal, implementing the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and promoting the military relationship between the two countries in a healthy, stable, and sustainable direction," he added. Meng highlighted that the risk of global nuclear conflict was on the rise, adding that recent conflicts have seen nuclear deterrence signals being issued. He also noted that the major nuclear powers were now operating in a 'vacuum with no treaties, no verification, and no dialogue', leading to the erosion of international arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation regimes. "Under the AUKUS pact, Australia is developing nuclear-powered submarines. Japan is pushing to revise its pacifist constitution and the three non-nuclear principles and seeking to have allies deploy nuclear weapons on its soil," Meng stated. This follows Hegseth's comment of 'rightful alarm regarding China's historic military buildup'. He also rallied his Pacific allies to accelerate their defence transformations and build collective combat power. Widely recognised as Asia’s premier defence and security summit, this year's IISS Shangri-La Dialogue comes at a critical geopolitical juncture, bringing together government figures, military chiefs and security experts to discuss a range of security issues in the Indo-Pacific. The summit takes place in Singapore on May 29–31."
