'No macho rhetoric!' - Fico urges EU-Russia dialogue, warns Romania drone incident could 'lead to World War Three'

"Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico warned on Saturday that the recent drone incident in Romania risks dangerously escalating tensions between the European Union and Russia into a broader conflict. "It could lead to a Third World War," Fico stressed. "I also warn against strong statements and macho rhetoric about a war between the European Union and Russia. Such talk can only come from completely irresponsible people who think that war is some kind of computer game." Fico insisted that only dialogue between the EU and Russia can prevent a 'total disaster,' highlighting the human cost of conflict and warning that war could force people to flee into shelters 'from which there is often no return.' "This incident, about which we know virtually nothing, should lead to enormous efforts to open dialogue between the European Union and the Russian Federation," the Prime Minister stated. "Let us begin to reflect together on how, in these times of crisis, government leaders should behave, and whether those in Brussels who today are portrayed as mortal enemies of Russia or China are acting responsibly," he concluded. Romanian authorities previously reported a drone-related security incident near the country's airspace. President Nicosur Dan has admitted the incident was a Ukraine shootdown during a trip to the site of the crash. He revealed that when drones had "passed over the territory of Ukraine, some of them were shot down, and one of them was probably hit over the city of Reni. His (the drone's) trajectory changed, and he hit Galati." Western leaders were quick to blame Russia earlier. NATO chief Mark Rutte hit out at Moscow's recklessness' while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia had 'crossed yet another line'. Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the Eurasian Economic Union Forum in Astana, said, "no one can determine the origin of any aircraft until an investigation has been conducted." Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticised Bucharest's move, calling the 'hype' as part of an "anti-Russian, Russophobic information campaign [the West] are waging.""
