MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert on Sunday as several power plants remained unavailable. In an advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert would be in effect from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid's contingency requirement, indicating that power reserves have thinned but that supply remains adequate to meet consumer demand. Available capacity in the Visayas grid was projected at 2,573 megawatts (MW) against an expected peak demand of 2,327 MW. NGCP said 22 power plants were unavailable due to outages, while 12 others were operating at reduced capacity, resulting in 959.05 MW of unavailable capacity. Of the plants on outage, 13 have been on forced outage since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023 and one since 2021. The grid operator attributed the yellow alert primarily to the unavailability of several large coal-fired power plants in the Visayas, namely Therma Visayas Inc. Units 1 and 2, Panay Energy Development Corp. Unit 3, and KEPCO SPC Power Corp. Unit 2. NGCP did not announce any rotational power interruption, but advised stakeholders to monitor further updates on grid conditions.
