'She represents everything that is worst' - Thousands of Peruvians march against presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori one week before run-off election in Lima

"Thousands of Peruvians marched through Lima on Saturday in opposition to Popular Force presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, one week before Peru's presidential run-off election, scheduled to take place on 7 June 2026. Carrying banners, flags and chanting slogans, demonstrators marched through the main streets of central Lima in defence of democracy and in criticism of Fujimori's political legacy. "Fujimorism for me, in reality, is a repudiation for Keiko and I recommend to all the youth not to vote seriously for her (...) because we don't want to end the legacy of her father, who left Peru in ruins," said protester Harley Cabrera. The gathering took place in San Martin Square, where civic groups, social organisations, student associations and activists assembled to express their opposition to Fujimorismo and warn of what they consider a risk to democratic institutions should Popular Force return to power. "We are here precisely against Keiko. Keiko, who represents corruption, impunity, the mafia pact. Everything that is worst is Keiko," said protester Milagros Gallegos. The demonstration follows other civic protests held in recent days in cities such as Arequipa and Huancayo and reflects the electoral tensions surrounding the final stretch of a campaign widely regarded as one of the most polarised in Peru in recent years. The Popular Force candidate won the first round with 17.1 per cent of the vote, while Roberto Helbert Sanchez Palomino of the Together for Peru party secured 12 per cent. It is the fourth time that 51-year-old Fujimori has run for the presidency."
