VIETNAM President and Communist Party leader Tô Lâm, with first lady Ngo Phuong Ly, arrived in the country on Sunday for a two-day state visit. The Vietnam Airlines plane carrying Lam and his delegation landed at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City at 12:40 p.m. They were welcomed by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. This is the first time Vietnam’s party leader has made a stop in the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scheduled to receive the Vietnamese leader at Malacañang on Monday for a bilateral meeting. They will discuss their countries’ collaboration in trade and investment, food security, defense and maritime cooperation, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. The two leaders will then lead the presentation of the signed agreement and hold a joint press conference. Lâm’s visit comes as Manila and Hanoi mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Vietnam remains the Philippines’ sole Strategic Partner in Southeast Asia and is home to more than 7,000 Filipinos. The Philippines will open a consulate in Ho Chi Minh City this year as part of the continued expansion of its presence and services in Vietnam.
