DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to strengthening defense cooperation with South Korea and Singapore during separate bilateral meetings on May 30 on the sidelines of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD). In his meeting with South Korean Minister Ahn Gyuback, Teodoro expressed appreciation for the country’s continued support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program and the sustained cooperation in enhancing defense capabilities. Teodoro highlighted the two nations’ enduring historical ties forged during the Korean War, emphasizing the importance of preserving the legacy of Filipino soldiers who fought alongside Korean forces. The two defense leaders talked about regional security developments, including the situation on the Korean peninsula and in the West Philippine Sea. They extended invitations for future engagements, including the Asean Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus and the Seoul Defense Dialogue later this year. Teodoro and Singapore Minister Chan Chun Sing discussed ways to further strengthen defense relations between their countries. Teodoro underscored the value of expanded joint training and exercises between the AFP and the Singapore Armed Forces in enhancing interoperability and readiness. The two defense leaders also discussed humanitarian assistance and disaster relief cooperation. Teodoro cited the mutual benefits of Singapore’s continued participation in exercises aligned with its expertise and capabilities. Chan welcomed the Philippines’ offer to further expand defense cooperation. Teodoro expressed appreciation for Singapore’s hospitality in hosting the SLD, while Chan conveyed Singapore’s support for the Philippines’ Asean chairship. Teodoro also presented a vision of the Philippines as a hub for convergence among like-minded partners, underscoring its role in preserving the freedom of the seas and the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region.
