Containment push - Bunia opens new Ebola treatment centre as DRC steps up outbreak response

"The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the World Health Organisation (WHO) officially opened a new Ebola treatment centre at the Evangelical Medical Centre (CME) in Bunia, the provincial capital of Ituri, on Sunday. Footage shows WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus attending the opening, where he spoke to medical workers and toured the new facility alongside other officials. During his visit, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged the public to bring suspected cases forward immediately to save lives and prevent the virus from spreading. "The key is the community, and this should be everybody's business. Every citizen should care, and everyone should take care of himself or herself and take care of each other as well. By doing that, we can stop this outbreak as soon as possible," he stressed. The Incident Manager at Congo's National Institute of Public Health, Pierre Akilimali, welcomed Ghebreyesus's presence as a powerful symbol of global solidarity. "The visit of the WHO Director-General is a sign of comfort. It is a sign of solidarity, because we, as Africans, say that we recognise our best friends during difficult times. [...] When we are together, we will get the most positive result as quickly as possible," Akilimali stated. The epidemiologist noted that the priority is to work with global partners to contain the outbreak within the province and prevent further spread, describing containment as key to restoring normalcy and enabling economic recovery. "Together with our global solidarity partners, we will therefore improve this response and combat it as quickly as possible. Our effort is to contain the epidemic here in this province, and not let it spread beyond the DRC, although we have a few cases in Uganda," he said. An Ebola outbreak was declared by the DRC and Uganda on May 15, after laboratory tests confirmed Bundibugyo virus disease. WHO named it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.  According to local authorities, there are 125 confirmed cases and seven confirmed deaths in the DRC, alongside nine cases and one death in neighbouring Uganda. The DRC has also reported 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths."
