"Polling stations opened on Sunday in Bogota for Colombia's presidential elections, a day that will determine President Gustavo Petro's successor for the 2026-2030 term. Citizens arrived at polling stations from the early morning hours to cast their votes, while local authorities and security forces monitored the election day. "This is one of the most important elections in a long time, because it's the chance to continue a process of change or remain mired in anarchy and chaos," said voter Arturo Brun, arguing that the country needs to be rebuilt. "The country has improved a lot. It's really very difficult to rebuild a country with 200 years of corruption. We've seen that our president [Gustavo Petro] has made a great effort for the people who have suffered so much hunger," he added. Other voters, like Jose Baez, emphasised the importance of citizen participation in these elections, noting that suffrage is a fundamental tool that represents the will of the Colombian people. "It's important because our vote is a manifestation of us, the citizens, of what we want from the country, of what we expect from the country. Our vote is the expression of a democracy that we have always lived under and that we always want, for years to come and for future generations," he declared. For her part, voter Emar Viloria highlighted that so far the elections have taken place in a peaceful atmosphere. "I've seen a peaceful day with quite a few people voting, and I hope it stays that way throughout the day and that many people go out to vote for Colombia," she noted. Among the main contenders in this election are Ivan Cepeda, candidate of the Historical Pact and representative of the left-wing coalition; Paloma Valencia, of the Democratic Center, a movement founded by former President Alvaro Uribe; and Abelardo de la Espriella, candidate for Defenders of the Homeland. Although voting is not mandatory in Colombia, more than 41 million citizens are eligible to participate in these elections, both within and outside the country."
