'Blessed to be cured' - Four nurses share experiences surviving Ebola virus as DRC fights outbreak

"Four nurses from the Evangelical Medical Center were confirmed to be cured after surviving Ebola virus infection. Footage filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bunia on Sunday, shows the survivors posing with recovery certificates after leaving treatment centre. WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and officials from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also participated in the ceremony. "I thank God because after the treatment I received, I feel well. I no longer have any symptoms and I am no longer afraid. After several difficult days, I was blessed to be declared cured," shared Mika Maladie, a survivor. Another cured nurse, Furaha Ntikanila, praised doctors who cared for them during treatment. "It's not easy. We were with other people suffering from the same disease. Unfortunately, some have died and others are still in critical condition. For those of us who have recovered and are being discharged today, we give glory to God," she added. In turn, professor Yap Boum, Incident Manager at Africa CDC, said these recoveries demonstrate the progress of the response, even though many challenges remain. "The most critical thing today is ensuring the coordination of all partners so that everyone doesn't pull in the same direction, but so that we can ensure the government has the necessary support in all pillars of the response," he concluded. An Ebola outbreak was declared by the DRC and Uganda on May 15, after laboratory tests confirmed Bundibugyo virus disease. WHO named it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.  According to local authorities, there are 125 confirmed cases and seven confirmed deaths in the DRC, alongside nine cases and one death in neighbouring Uganda. The DRC has also reported 906 suspected cases and 223 suspected deaths."
