Elections under surveillance - Colombian police arrest seven people for electoral crimes during presidential elections

"Colombian security forces reported that the presidential election day this Sunday is proceeding without any serious incidents affecting the electoral process. However, at least seven people have been arrested for alleged electoral crimes in the country. Mauricio Rico, manager of the Democracy Plan and director of Protection and Special Services of the National Police, issued a report in which he ruled out events that compromise citizen participation in these elections. "So far we have not had any incidents that affect the development of the electoral event. Similarly, no incidents affecting citizen security," he assured in a message shared by the Ministry of Defense. The official explained that of the seven detainees, five were carried out in the city of Popayan, department of Cauca, after a citizen complaint alerted about a possible electoral irregularity. In this act, 1,032,000 pesos, equivalent to 284 US dollars, were seized. "Police personnel are dispatched and locate five people in a public place, from whom one million 32 thousand pesos, some cell phones, and stickers as if they were payment receipts were seized," he detailed. Likewise, one person was arrested in the city of Valledupar for alleged fraudulent voting, as they cast their vote on two different occasions, but at different polling stations. The seventh person was arrested for the alleged crime of voter coercion, as they advised and recommended citizens to vote for one of the 13 candidates. All detainees were placed at the disposal of the competent authorities. In addition to the irregular acts, the Police launched an operation called 'Hunter Plan', focused on locating people with current judicial orders for different crimes. "In this way, we report that so far five people have been captured for different crimes by judicial order, including sexual abuse, homicide, qualified theft, illegal possession of weapons, and conspiracy to commit a crime," added Mauricio Rico. In these presidential elections, the successor to President Gustavo Petro for the 2026-2030 period will be determined. For this purpose, more than 246,000 men and women of the Public Force were deployed throughout the country, in order to guarantee the development of the electoral day."
