NGCP issues yellow alert for Visayas grid anew

MANILA, Philippines—The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for Visayas on Monday, June 1 as the grid continues to be hounded by supply lack. The yellow alert will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,488 megawatts (MW), but available capacity is only 2,579 MW. NGCP said that 20 plants are on forced outage, while 11 plants are running on derated capacities. The transmission firm said that some of Visayas' large coal plants -- Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Unit 2 of KEPCO SPC Power Corp. (103 MW) -- remain unavailable. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
