Globe equips govt agencies with skills to detect, stop mobile scams

MANILA, Philippines—To further strengthen mobile security, Globe ramped up its collaboration with government agencies to help equip authorities with the skills needed to operationalize International Mobile Subscriber Identity-(IMSI)Catcher Detectors to enhance efforts against mobile-based scams. Last March, the telecommunications company turned over IMSI Catcher Detectors as it conducted training with concerned government agencies to help them strengthen their capability to use the tools in real-world enforcement. The session gathered representatives from the National Telecommunications Commission, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, the Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the National Bureau of Investigation for a hands-on learning experience. Dr. Altaf Shaik, a globally recognized expert in cellular and next-generation network security from Technische Universität Berlin, shared insights on how these threats exploit vulnerabilities in mobile networks, along with practical approaches to detecting and mitigating them. During the training, coordination across agencies was emphasized, where information sharing and aligned response can significantly improve outcomes. “This is no longer just about having the tools,” Froi Castelo, Globe Group General Counsel, said. “What matters is how effectively they are used, and that requires stronger coordination and a shared understanding of the threat landscape.” Globe said working closely with government partners will help improve systems and response for faster scam detection and coordinated actions. Anton Bonifacio, Globe Chief AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Data Officer and Chief Information Security Officer, said that detection is just part of the system. “What really matters is what happens after,” he said. “If we can help teams better identify the source of these rogue signals and act on them faster, that’s where you start to see real impact,” Bonifacio said. “This kind of collaboration allows teams on the ground to move faster and stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threats,” Bonifacio said. Globe stressed that the initiatives would help ensure that the systems behind it would remain secure and reliable as mobile connectivity continues to shape how Filipinos live and work. “Globe and its partners remain committed to strengthening the country’s digital defenses and protecting users from evolving mobile-based risks” Bonifacio said.
