'Mexico is nobody's pinata' - Sheinbaum warns US politicising fight against organised crime in Mexico, slams 'interference'

"Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum gave her second national report on the work by her government from the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City on Sunday, where thousands of supporters gathered. Her report was titled 'Honesty, Results, Love for the People and the Homeland', during which she spoke about the defence of Mexican sovereignty in the face of recent tensions with the United States related to investigations and accusations against Mexican officials for alleged links to organised crime. Sheinbaum questioned the true interests of Washington in making these accusations. "Is it really a legitimate interest to combat organised crime? Or perhaps we are seeing how sectors of the American far-right are using our country to position themselves towards their 2026 elections (...) Mexico is nobody's pinata," she warned. On security issues, the president stressed that for years the Mexican government has warned that a significant portion of the weapons used by criminal organisations are smuggled in from the US, while Donald Trump's government has demanded more actions from Mexico to address the problem. Sheinbaum argued that shared responsibility between both countries in combating crime is essential. "It is essential to stop the illegal trafficking of weapons into our country and it is fundamental that they address the serious drug consumption problem in their territory," she noted. Sheinbaum also maintained that the fight against organised crime must be developed within the frameworks established by international law and cited the so-called Estrada Doctrine, which favours non-intervention in the internal affairs of other countries. "It must be very clear, Mexico does not admit interference in our internal affairs because we do not meddle in the internal affairs of other nations," Sheinbaum stated. Closing her message, the president reaffirmed her commitment to work for the country and defend national sovereignty, assuring that she will continue to promote the objectives of the Fourth Transformation, the political party that gave her the victory in the 2024 presidency."
