"Residents in Beni described scenes of fear and devastation after a deadly overnight attack blamed on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which reportedly killed around 20 civilians in the Ngadi area of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. “It was exactly at 19:00 that the enemy infiltrated the area and killed our Bambuti brothers who live here,” eyewitness Joel Kabunga said, adding that several residents managed to flee or hide in nearby bushland. Footage from the scene shows local officials and residents gathering near the victims' bodies, while community members carried the dead through the city following the attack. Civil society leader Pepin Kavotha said local residents and community leaders had alerted security forces before the attack, but claimed the response had been inadequate. “Six people are a lot, really a lot. Others have been abducted, while the injured have been taken for medical treatment,” Kavotha said, calling on authorities in Kinshasa to provide better equipment to security forces operating in eastern Congo. He also warned that armed groups were increasingly able to move between neighbouring provinces before launching attacks inside urban areas. The Allied Democratic Forces, originally formed in Uganda during the 1990s, have been active in eastern DR Congo for more than two decades and are accused of carrying out numerous massacres against civilians. The Ebola-hit provinces of North Kivu and Ituri remain among the most volatile regions in the country, despite ongoing military operations by Congolese and Ugandan forces. According to the United Nations, armed group violence has displaced millions of people across eastern DR Congo."
