"Celebrated Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martinez, whose vital save in the final against France helped ensure Argentina lifted the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is once again taking centre stage in his hometown of Mar del Plata. This weekend, the city hosted a free event to celebrate the premiere of 'Dibu Martinez: The Boy Who Saves Time', an animated film produced by Netflix that recounts the story of the World Cup-winning goalkeeper's life with the Argentina national team. The family-focused event took place at Plaza Mitre, with interactive spaces inspired by the goalkeeper's career, as well as football challenges, live music and food trucks. Attendees shared their immense pride in their town's most famous global ambassador. "The truth is that it is a source of pride that 'Dibu' is our ambassador to the world (...) we shed plenty of tears, especially during the part when his parents talk about the sacrifices they made so that he could first join Independiente (Club Atletico Independiente) and then Arsenal in England," explained supporter Melisa Gutierrez. The audiovisual production is based on a story by Argentine writer Hernan Casciari and illustrated by Ricardo Liniers Sir. Through animation, the work tells the story of Martinez's journey from his early years in Mar del Plata to becoming a key figure in the Argentina side that won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, highlighting the family sacrifices and obstacles he faced in reaching the highest level of international football. For many residents of Mar del Plata, the goalkeeper's international success also shows the power of perseverance for the city's youth. "It means a lot for Mar del Plata because he is also an example for children. (...) Look at all the kids with footballs, with their hair dyed, playing. That's wonderful, that encourages them," commented Silvia Elias, while watching the activities in the square. The event brought together hundreds of families and 'Dibu' supporters, who enjoyed a special day dedicated to one of the city's most beloved sports figures. Beyond the titles won with the national team, the film and the event sought to highlight a story of commitment and resilience that continues to resonate with supporters of different generations. Martinez began his development in the youth ranks of Club Atletico Independiente in Argentina before continuing his career in England with Arsenal, where he waited patiently for his opportunity before his breakout season earned him a move to 2026 Europe League winners Aston Villa, where he still holds the number one jersey.
