'Colombia needed you' - Abelardo de la Espriella supporters celebrate his advance to Colombia's presidential run-off in Barranquilla

"Supporters of presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella took to the streets of Barranquilla on Sunday to celebrate his qualification for the second round of Colombia's presidential election, after preliminary results from the National Civil Registry confirmed that none of the candidates secured the absolute majority needed to win outright in the first round. With vehicle caravans, flags, T-shirts linked to the 'Defenders of the Nation' movement and chants of support, followers of the lawyer and political leader celebrated the election result. According to figures reported by the National Civil Registry, with more than 99 per cent of polling stations counted, Abelardo de la Espriella won approximately 43.7 per cent of the vote, while Historic Pact candidate Ivan Cepeda secured around 40.9 per cent. As neither candidate surpassed the constitutional threshold of 50 per cent plus one of valid votes, both will compete in the presidential run-off scheduled for 21 June 2026. Those attending the celebrations said the result represents a positive sign for supporters of De la Espriella's candidacy. "This news is very important for us people of Barranquilla because we hope that our president Abelardo, now that he has reached the second round, can be elected as he should be," said Steve Lopez. Families were also present during the event, saying the run-off would be decisive for the country's political future and reiterating their support for the candidate. "Colombia needed you. All of us backing the Tiger are going to come out victorious. Because I voted for healthcare, for children, (...) so they can have a country with a good future," said Iris Gonzalez, another supporter of De la Espriella. Over the next three weeks, both candidates will intensify their political activities and unveil new strategies to win over undecided voters ahead of the decisive vote on 21 June."
