Buddha birthday! - Thousands mark Vesak with vibrant night procession in Vietnam's Hue

"Thousands of people illuminated the streets of Hue City in central Vietnam on Saturday during a colourful procession marking Vesak, which commemorates the Buddha’s birthday. Footage captured from the air and on the ground shows the procession beginning at Dieu De National Pagoda, with monks, nuns and worshippers carrying flowers through the streets alongside music and decorated floats. The procession later arrived at Tu Dam Ancestral Pagoda for the main ritual. "I am deeply honoured to attend the Buddha's Birthday festival. The atmosphere here is unique, solemn, and dignified," one participant said. "Coming from a Tu Ton Buddhist family, I participate in the procession to honour the Buddha's birthday, express my gratitude, and spread the spirit of peace and compassion to everyone," another added. The ceremony was organised by the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Hue City and drew large numbers of monks, nuns, Buddhists, residents and tourists, according to local media. The procession followed a Buddha bathing ceremony at Dieu De National Pagoda, held as part of Vesak 2570 celebrations, before moving through the city towards Tu Dam Ancestral Pagoda. Vesak is one of the most important observances in Buddhism, marking the birth, enlightenment and passing of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. The United Nations recognises Vesak as an international cultural and spiritual observance under a 1999 General Assembly resolution."
