'You never forget how to ride bicycle' - Argentine group helps blind people and people with disabilities ride bicycles in safe and inclusive environment

"'Tandem Norte' is a cycling group in Argentina created to enable blind people, those with low vision, neurodivergent individuals and people with motor disabilities to ride bicycles safely, with the aim of promoting inclusion, physical activity and equal opportunities in outdoor settings. Founded by architect Sandra Dajnowski and lawyer Jose Soto, the initiative operates with tandem bicycles (bicycles designed to be ridden by two or more people), where one volunteer (guide) steers while the other person (rider) pedals. Founder Sandra Dajnowski said her personal experience was decisive in the creation of the group after going through progressive vision loss in adulthood. "I could see with one eye until I was 47 and I became completely blind at the age of 47. I am now 62. It was a process of (...) retinal detachments," said the founder. Since then, more than 50 people have taken part in activities that combine exercise, recreation and contact with nature. Co-founder Jose Soto stressed that the initiative is not only aimed at people with visual impairments but also at those with other conditions that can benefit from adapted sport. "Just as there are blind people who cycle with us, (...) there are people with neurodivergence, (...) Down syndrome, autism and developmental delays. There are children with motor difficulties who, through practice, gradually keep their foot firmly on the pedal, learn (...) and improve tremendously," Soto said. For participants, the experience represents far more than a sporting activity. Jonathan Maceo, a blind participant in the group, highlighted the emotional impact of getting back on a bicycle. "Getting back on a bicycle after losing your sight is exactly as the saying goes: you never forget how to ride one. It was wonderful," he said. 'Tandem Norte' continues to expand its community through regular outings and open activities, establishing itself as an example of how sport can become a tool for social integration."
