MANILA, Philippines — The impeachment trial will help the voting public decide whether Vice President Sara Duterte deserves their confidence, Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville Luistro said on Monday. "That is why impeachment trial should happen because considering that she has pronounced already her intention to run for president in 2028, this impeachment trial will help the sovereign Filipino decide whether or not she deserves the faith and confidence of the electorate", Luistro, the House of Representatives' lead impeachment prosecutor, said in a press conference. The House, voting 257-25 with nine abstentions, impeached Duterte on May 11, 2026 over alleged misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth allegedly amassed, alleged bribery, and the kill remark against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. It then sent the impeachment articles to the Senate for trial. Duterte denied the allegations in the two complaints heard by the Luistro-led House Committee on Justice. This committee on Apr. 29, 2026 found probable cause to impeach her so it sent the impeachment articles to the House plenary for action.
