MANILA, Philippines — A bicameral conference committee approved on Monday the bill aiming to expand the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES). "We are happy to report the approval by the Bicameral Conference Committee of the bill amending the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. As Chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education, principal author, and sponsor of this measure, I consider this a major step toward making tertiary education more accessible, more equitable, and more responsive to the real needs of Filipino learners," Tingog Rep. Jude Acidre, who led the House of Representatives' contingent to the bicameral panel, said in a statement. Under the bill, the statement said, students from Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program households "will be placed at the top of the TES priority list". The bulk also aims to create the Private Education Assistance program which would, the statement said, "provide government grants to disadvantaged students who enroll in priority programs in CHED-recognized private higher education institutions and TESDA-registered technical-vocational institutions, subject to quality standards and pilot implementation before full rollout." CHEd stands for Commission on Higher Education and Tesda, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. The measure is a priority one of the Marcos administration.
