Yellow alert up for Visayas power grid due to inadequate supply

MANILA, Philippines -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Tuesday due to inadequate power supply caused by inoperable coal plants and high demand. Based on its advisory, the NGCP said that as of 8 a.m., the Yellow Alert will be issued between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. as peak demand is expected to reach 2,412 megawatts (MW) against the available capacity of 2,542 MW. NGCP said that 28 plants were on forced outage, while 11 were running on derated capacities, totaling 996.40 MW of unavailable power for the grid. The transmission firm said that the reasons for the yellow alert declaration were mainly because of the continued inoperability of Visayas' large coal plants, namely Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), Panay Energy Development Corp Unit 3 (150 MW), and Unit 2 of KEPCO SPC Power Corp. (103 MW) and high system demand forecast. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
