Ready for kick-off! - Mexico City unveils transit and access blueprint for World Cup curtain-raiser

"FIFA officials and the Mexico City government unveiled operational plans for the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, ten days before the tournament kicks off in the capital. The details were presented on Monday during the inauguration of Casa Ciudad de Mexico, the international media centre for the tournament. Jurgen Mainka, FIFA's General Director in Mexico, said the official FIFA app would be the main channel for ticket access and communication with fans. "It is important to emphasise that the mobile application is the only platform where fans can access their tickets," he said. Maika said FIFA was staying in direct contact with ticket holders through official emails and app notifications, reminding them to download their tickets in advance. He added that the journey to the Estadio Ciudad de México would feel different from previous events, with some areas around the venue turned into pedestrian-only zones. The stadium will open at 9 am on June 11, with the inauguration ceremony due to begin at 11:30 am. Officials urged supporters to arrive early, saying more details on access routes would be shared before match day. "Why arrive early? Because we have a great excuse - a line-up of renowned artists," Maika said, adding that the ceremony would be interactive and would involve fans inside the stadium. Mexico City Mobility Secretary Hector Ulises Garcia Nieto said public transport would be the backbone of the city's mobility plan for the event. He announced that fans would receive wristbands with QR codes containing information on arrival and departure routes. The transport operation will begin at 7 am on match day. "With this QR code, people will know where to go, what route to take, where to arrive and where to leave, without needing to be connected to the internet. They will have direct maps," he said. Mexico City head of government, Clara Brugada, also confirmed that classes at public primary, secondary and upper secondary schools in the capital will be suspended on June 11, the day of the opening ceremony only."
