MANILA, Philippines—With the upcoming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, a non-partisan citizen’s network was launched to monitor the proceedings. On Monday, civil society leaders, students, lawyers and concerned citizens gathered at De La Salle University in Manila to launch the “Bantay Senado,” which aims to “help ensure that the proceedings are conducted in a constitutional, fair, impartial, and transparent manner.” According to Bantay Senado convenor and spokesman Professor Cleve Arguelles, senator-judges owe it to the Filipino people to be “fair and impartial” throughout the process.
