Kemayoran disaster - Seven-hour blaze wipes out hundreds of homes in Jakarta

"Hundreds of families have been displaced in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta overnight Monday, after a massive fire swept through a densely-populated neighbourhood near Jiung Market. Footage shows the aftermath, with dozens of homes reduced to rubble and charred debris. Near disaster site, tents have been set up to house displaced residents, while workers from the Amil Zakat National Agency were seen preparing to distribute food and drinks to those affected. "This morning we have carried out activities to assist the affected residents by providing food and drinks, as well as helping them clear away the debris. We [...] have deployed 15 personnel, consisting of a medical team and a food and beverage service team. We will be standing by at this location for the next seven days," said Deden Zainudin, a member of BAZNAS Indonesia. One displaced resident, Casmudi, urged the government to assist those affected by providing recovery support, including financial aid and housing. "If it is true that the government cares about its people, please, after this fire, provide us with decent housing again, wearable clothes and business capital assistance. [...] Please help us who are currently struggling," he said. Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency said on Tuesday that at least least 35 units and 175 personnel were deployed to the Kemayoran district of Central Jakarta to take part in rescue operations. Firefighters began battling the fire at 21:05 local time on Monday, bringing it under control approximately seven hours later. Medical teams transported several people to the hospital and treated some on-site for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. No fatalities have been reported at the time of publication. According to Deputy Governor Rano Karno, preliminary assessments revealed that the blaze affected around 304 buildings and 354 households - 679 residents in total. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. Medical teams treated several people on-site for minor injuries and smoke inhalation. No fatalities have been reported at the time of publication."
