'We are going to sign, I hope this month' - Sheinbaum announces agreement with the Brazilian Petrobras for deep-water oil exploration

"The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that in the coming weeks an agreement will be signed between the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the semi-public Brazilian company, Petrobras, during her morning conference on Tuesday from Mexico City. She stated that the collaboration is aimed at strengthening oil exploration in deep waters, highlighting the Brazilian company's technology, which would be useful, she said, in the Cantarell Complex, located in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Campeche. "In the depth, at greater depth, there may be oil, they have these techniques. So we are going to sign, I hope this month, the agreement with Petrobras and Pemex, which will help Pemex with exploration and production," she mentioned. On the other hand, the president referred to the statements of the Mexican businessman Carlos Slim about Mexico potentially increasing its oil production by 800,000 to one million barrels per day with public investments. "That's what Pemex itself is doing and also the support we are going to have in this agreement, this agreement that will be signed with Petrobras. I don't know if it's 800 [thousand] or 1 million barrels of oil. From my perspective, what we have to ensure is the production of oil for the country, our internal consumption," she pointed out. The alliance between Pemex and Petrobras was proposed in March by the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who stated that the Brazilian oil company could provide "a lot of help" to the Mexican state company. Since then, he has reiterated his support for energy cooperation between the two countries."
