FORMER Public Works secretary Manual Bonoan was transferred to a private hospital on Tuesday evening to undergo more intensive monitoring of his heart condition, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Wednesday. Bonoan was taken to the PNP General Hospital (PNPGH) after his blood pressure spiked dangerously high on the day of his arrest on Monday. The PNP said the PNPGH was not equipped to conduct specialized tests needed by the former Cabinet member. PNP Health Service director Brig. Gen. Portia Manalad earlier said Bonoan, 80, continues to undergo monitoring and assessment by medical specialists. “He’s under observation with elevated lab results and for further evaluation of medical specialists, taking into consideration his age and risks,” Manalad said. He was discharged on Tuesday when his condition stabilized and was sent to the Sandiganbayan for the issuance of a court order upon doctor’s clearance that he was fit to stand trial. His arraignment, however, did not push through and Bonoan was later brought back to the PNPGH on Tuesday afternoon after his blood pressure spiked to 170/100 again. His arraignment, along with those of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and three others, was postponed to June 4. The PNP assured the public that legal procedures were being strictly followed as Bonoan remains under police custody and medical care. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization is committed to ensuring that Bonoan’s hospitalization will not hinder the implementation of lawful court processes. “The PNP enforces court orders fairly and without favor. Former secretary Bonoan surrendered voluntarily but required immediate medical intervention after a severe blood pressure spike during booking,” Nartatez said in a statement. “I have directed the PNP Health Service and the CIDG to maintain full transparency, enforce tight security and ensure that no special or VIP treatment is extended,” Nartatez said.
