Forget the beach… hit the slopes! - Summer skiing and snowboarding season kicks off in Sochi

"Snowboarders and skiers descended on the stunning, powder-white slopes of the Krasnaya Polyana Resort in Sochi for the famous Bonus Summer Camp festival. Footage shot on Tuesday shows some performing amazing tricks on their snowboards. "The mountain valley is naturally shaped like a bowl, so when clouds gather above it, they help to preserve the snow very well for a very long time. That is precisely why we are the first to open the season and the last to close it," said Andrei Kotov, the ski resort’s Product Marketing Head. According to snowboarder Denis Leontiev, the slope is divided into five areas for different skill levels. "One is for beginners who are just taking their first steps on snowboards and skis; the second is for those who are a bit more advanced - that’s where kids who already know how to snowboard come to learn tricks. Then we have two jumps that are more suited to teenagers. The fourth area is for jibbing where snowboarders and skiers, no matter their levels, can slide rails and perform various tricks. There’s also a large jump," he explained. Resort visitor Evgeni Matveev noted the record amount of snow this year: "We’ve never seen anything like it before." "The atmosphere is amazing - there are so many people here, especially children," the man added. The Bonus Summer Camp festival runs from June 1-28, offering participants a 30,000-square-metre summer snow park set up 2,050 metres above sea level."
