"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned the decision by U.S. authorities to investigate sitting Mexican governors during a press conference Wednesday in Mexico City. "The people put [leaders in power] and the people take [leaders out]," the president stated, indicating that external actors cannot be allowed to influence decisions that belong solely to Mexicans. The president also defended her government's stance on the classification of cartels as terrorist organizations. She explained that Mexico does not agree with that definition because, according to the Penal Code, terrorism has different characteristics, although she made it clear that these are criminal groups that must be combated. "We cannot accept that these groups be called terrorists because their objective is different. That doesn't mean they aren't criminal groups, that we don't have to work to pacify Mexico and stop what we call the generators of violence," the president affirmed. Despite the differences, Sheinbaum assured that she is not seeking a conflict with Washington and highlighted the constant communication with Donald Trump to keep diplomatic channels open."
