'Education is defended in the street' - Strong clashes between police and hooded individuals during student march against Kast's cuts in Santiago

"A student march called by the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confech) led to intense clashes with police in Santiago on Wednesday. Recorded images show the confrontation between hooded individuals and the police institution. The authorities used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters. The protesters, among whom students and teachers stood out, spoke out against the austerity plan of the Government of Jose Antonio Kast and the announced cuts in education, holding signs with slogans such as: 'Protect, don't cut', 'Education is defended in the street' and 'There is no future built on inequality'. According to local media, the clashes occurred after the protesters did not comply with the order of the Presidential Delegation of the Metropolitan region not to start the march at Plaza Baquedano. During the demonstration, Carolina Roa, a teacher, denounced that students do not have "a safe or dignified space" and asserted that "this is a community struggle" and not only of those who make up the academic community. "I think it's the best and healthiest thing, that young people take to the streets, because the foundation of a country is education, and from there comes everything else," replied the protester Juliana Yebrak. The demonstration occurs after President Jose Antonio Kast ordered a plan of adjustments and cuts in most ministries, equivalent to 2,000 million dollars. This involves the education sector, with a cut of 197.7 billion Chilean pesos (220,772,983 dollars), specifically in higher education."
