'We are going to defeat the death project' - Students march in support of Ivan Cepeda in Bogota and question presidential election results

"Students from the National University of Colombia mobilized this Wednesday in Bogota to express their support for the leftist candidate Ivan Cepeda and to speak out against the results of the first round of the presidential elections. Images recorded in Bogota show the student mobilization in front of the International Center of Bogota, where Ivan Cepeda delivered a speech expressing his gratitude to the Colombian youth after the electoral day on May 31, in which he came in second place. "The most difficult moments in this country, when we have run the risk of closing any possibility of change, any alternative for the future of our nation. There, in that difficult moment, the young people have appeared to stand up," he expressed. Likewise, the candidate of the Historical Pact criticized his opponent Abelardo de la Espriella, who took first place in the elections, for proposing the construction of mega prisons as part of the transformation of the Colombian penitentiary system. "[They are] mega prisons to go and torture the young people of this country," Cepeda stated in his speech. In that sense, he affirmed that with the support of the people, the country will continue the legacy of President Gustavo Petro. "We are going to defeat the project of death," he added. The students present at the demonstration, in addition to showing their support for Cepeda and his movement, also criticized previous governments, pointing out that young people were killed with impunity. "Voting for Ivan Cepeda is necessary. We cannot continue going back to previous governments, where young people were vilely murdered, where young people disappeared," expressed the student Juan Guillermo Torres. According to the election count, Abelardo de la Espriella obtained first place with 10.3 million votes (43.7 percent), while Ivan Cepeda placed second with 9.6 million votes (40.9 percent). Both candidates will participate in a second round on June 21 to define the next president of Colombia for the period 2026-2030."
