Oh, Scheisse! - Germany suffers bitter UNSC defeat as Wadephul blames Russia, support for Israel

"Kyrgyzstan secured its first-ever seat on the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, while Germany suffered a surprise defeat in voting for non-permanent members serving the 2027-2028 term. "Having obtained the required two-thirds majority and the largest number of votes, Kyrgyzstan is elected as a member of the Security Council for a two-year term beginning on January 1st, 2027," said UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock. "I congratulate the states which have been elected members of the Security Council today, and I thank the tellers for their assistance in this election," she added. The UN General Assembly elected Kyrgyzstan, Austria, Portugal, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad and Tobago to serve on the Security Council from January 1, 2027. Kyrgyzstan won the Asia-Pacific seat after several rounds of voting against the Philippines, securing 142 votes to 49 in the final round and marking a diplomatic milestone for the Central Asian country. Germany failed to secure one of the two Western European and Others Group seats, receiving 104 votes and falling short of the required two-thirds majority. Portugal and Austria were elected with 134 and 131 votes respectively, ending Berlin’s bid to return to the council despite an active international campaign. "Obviously, the result is a real disappointment," said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who blamed Russia and Berlin's ongoing support for Ukraine for the bitter setback. "It also may have cost us votes that Germany must always assume a special responsibility for Israel with regard to the Middle East conflict," he added. The result comes at a difficult moment for Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Recent polling has shown that only 16% of Germans are satisfied with his leadership, with support for Germany’s conservative CDU/CSU bloc dwindling. A poll in April found Merz was the most unpopular leader in the world - coming bottom of a poll of 24 democratically elected heads. The Security Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It consists of five permanent veto-holding members, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside ten elected members serving two-year terms. The newly elected states will formally begin their mandates on January 1, 2027, replacing Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia."
