(AP Photo/Alex Brandon) A BBC reporter has said Donald Trump’s decision to go to war in Iran is “coming back to haunt him” as crunch elections loom in November. Washington correspondent Tom Simons’s comments came after the US House of Representatives voted to make it harder for the conflict to continue. It would require Trump to get the US Congress’s approval before carrying out any more military operations in the region. Four Republicans backed the move, which Simons said “shows the level of concern within some parts” of the party about the war. A ceasefire has been in place since April, but there is still no sign of a permanent peace deal. Speaking on Radio 4′s Today programme, Simons said: “Some might argue that when both sides have armed forces policing various blockades in the Strait of Hormuz , and the ceasefire has been broken a few times on each side, it is still very much a conflict.” Presenter Jonny Dymond said the vote suggested Trump’s control over the Republican Party is now “fraying”. Simons said: “Very much so, fraying at the edges I think is the best way of putting it. Among the four who voted for this resolution are Congressmen who have already come up against Donald Trump and have been somewhat critical of him in the past. “But the problem for the president is that he really did take the country into this conflict at what he called ‘a detour’ to deal with Iran’s nuclear weapons issue without bringing them along with him, and it is starting to come back to haunt him. “We have the midterm elections coming later in the year, and who knows what the political impact of this concern in the country about this conflict will be. “He will be hopeful and typically optimistic that it will all be sorted out by then. But there are so many moving parts that he can’t guarantee that there won’t be any political bounceback when Americans vote in the elections.” Subscribe to Commons People , the podcast that makes politics easy.
