Russell T Davies pictured in 2022 Tip Toe writer Russell T Davies has hit back at those who would criticise his work for lacking in subtlety. Last week, the Bafta winner premiered his new Channel 4 drama, which centres around two neighbours who become embroiled in a feud that quickly spirals out of control, exploring big themes like online radicalisation, misinformation and bigotry against the LGBTQ+ community. Reviews for Tip Toe were unanimously positive , although some questioned whether its messaging may be a little “on the nose”. Asked during an interview with the podcast Homosapiens , Russell was asked if he read reviews, admitting: “You do, and then you forget them straight away.” “Do you know what I love?” he continued. “Those reviewers who go, ‘oh, it’s a bit on the nose’. As though they would rather the cool scented aromas of drama, played with subtext, and text wafting gently around their nose, not on their nose. “Fuck off! I’m on the nose. Come and fucking sit with me you boring bastards. I love it when they call me that.” On a more serious note, he added: “It’s not time to be subtle. The world is loud and noisy and in big trouble.” View this post on Instagram Speaking to HuffPost UK in the lead-up to Tip Toe’s release , Russell described his latest TV offering as an “urgent” and “necessary” reflection of a world that is “out of control” and “at war with ourselves”. He also shared that it was inspired by events from his and his friends’ lives that left him feeling “driven to write” something addressing these themes. Alan Cumming and David Morrissey play Leo and Clive in Tip Toe Russell told Homosapiens: “ I very much appreciate Channel 4, they’ve given us the money and worked very hard to get it out as fast as possible. “Because there’s dialogue in it that’s going to be out of date [soon] – there’s dialogue referring to Keir Starmer and Kemi Badenoch, and they’ll be out before you know it! Let’s face it – both of them! “So, yes, they very much rushed to get it on screen, because the things that it is saying are about now, right now, today.” The first two episodes of Tip Toe are now streaming on Channel 4, with the final three following on Sunday 7 June.
