MMDA, JCI launch plastic recycling project for schools

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and JCI Manila have launched a project that will turn plastic waste collected from cleanup drives into school furniture for public schools in Metro Manila. On Thursday, June 4, the agencies signed a memorandum of agreement for Project Hiraya: Turning Waste into Worth, Creating Futures, which integrates cleanup operations with recycling and community-based environmental initiatives. MMDA Chairman Don Artes said the initiative highlights cooperation between government and civic groups in addressing waste management and environmental concerns. Artes said the project aligns with MMDA programs such as Bayanihan sa Estero and the Yes to Ayos campaign, which promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility. He said the partnership also aims to strengthen public awareness on proper waste management and encourage community participation in environmental protection efforts. Under the agreement, the MMDA will identify and recommend priority barangays, waterways, and open spaces where cleanup drives will be conducted. JCI Manila will work with recycling partner Plastic Flamingo (PLAF) to process collected plastic waste and convert it into durable school furniture, including chairs and tables for public schools. JCI Manila President Edison Ke said the project goes beyond cleanup activities and focuses on collective action and sustainability. He said the initiative seeks to transform plastic waste into useful resources while promoting environmental responsibility and community engagement. Project Hiraya Chairman Leeroy Livias Shoko said the collaboration supports both environmental protection and education by reducing waste and providing learning materials to schools and communities.
