Step towards energy security - Niger, Algeria inaugurate joint power station in Niamey

"Niger Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine and Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb inaugurated a new 40-megawatt power station in Gorou Banda on Thursday, as part of a joint energy project aimed at strengthening Niger’s national electricity grid. Footage shows the two leaders cutting the ceremonial ribbon and touring the facilities. Senior military officials and energy sector representatives can also be seen attending the inauguration. "This demonstrates the excellent relations of cooperation and solidarity between Niger and Algeria," Niamey Governor Assoumane Abdou Harouna said. "Your presence among us today is a sign of our shared commitment." He added that recent high-level exchanges between the two countries had translated political dialogue into practical cooperation, particularly in strategic infrastructure and energy development. Meanwhile, officials said the Gorou Banda plant is designed not only to increase generation capacity but also to strengthen technical skills within Niger's energy sector. "We worked together on this project [...] What we gained above all was training. It is a major advantage and will help NIGELEC, and indeed the State, build local capacity," Garba Idi Mamadou, a NIGELEC employee and trade unionist, remarked. He added that the project would reduce dependence on external contractors and support long-term operational independence. Niger and Algeria have steadily expanded cooperation in recent years, with a focus on energy, infrastructure, and regional connectivity. The Gorou Banda power station project is part of this broader framework, involving Niger's national electricity company NIGELEC and Algeria's SONELGAZ International."
