"The wax museum in Rio de Janeiro, located within the AquaRio marine aquarium facilities, unveiled a statue of the Brazilian star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pelé, on Wednesday as part of its commemorative activities leading up to the 2026 World Cup. The figure faithfully reproduces the three-time world champion and shows him dressed in a replica of the uniform worn by the Brazilian team during their victory at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The creation required two years of work by 20 artisans from various specialties at a workshop in London. The director of the wax museum, Joao Paulo, stated that the statue was made from a photograph that Pelé himself approved. "Upon learning of his mobility difficulties, we took advantage of an event he had as a sponsor in Barcelona; we met with him there and spent between four and five hours taking all his body measurements and photographs to then begin the process," he indicated. The tribute adds to the various initiatives promoted in Brazil and other countries since Pelé's death in December 2022, to remember the only footballer who has won three World Cups. The 2026 World Cup will be held in Mexico, the United States, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. Brazil will enter the tournament with the expectation of winning its sixth World Cup and ending a 24-year drought without this title since their triumph in South Korea and Japan in 2002."
