MANILA, Philippines — Supporters of Sen.Risa Hontiveros on Friday launched a movementfor herpresidential run in the 2028 national elections. Named “Risa Na” (It’s Risa’s Time), the event was held at the UP Bahay ng Alumni, hosted by actress Pokwang and Akbayan Youth Chairman Justine Balane. Among those who spoke at the event was former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who gave a video message. “I would like to say that there are two big reasons why we established the Risa Na movement… First, considering what’s happening at the Senate and the upcoming impeachment trial [of Vice President Sara Duterte] and many other destabilization activities, we need to have a leader who can guide us against these groups of middle forces,” he said in Filipino. “We need to guide our democracy because in the next few months, they will try to destroy our democracy,” Trillanes added. The former senator said this movement wasthe starting point for their preparations in 2028, saying this is the right time to kick-start Hontiveros’ campaign. “Risa Hontiveros is who we chose to lead our movement because she represents the characteristics of what we need as our country’s leader. Apart from her qualifications, we know how she excelled through her educational background. Apart from those, through the years, she pushed for so many advocacies, where she fought along with other sectors in society,” he said. Hontiveros, currently serving in the Senate majority under Sen.Sherwin Gatchalian, was not at the event. Former vice president and incumbent Naga City mayor Leni Robredo said she has no plans to run for higher office in 2028, while Hontiveros said in April that she was considering to run for president.
