'No point!' Vladimir Putin rejects 'Rambo' Volodymyr Zelensky's call for peace meeting

Vladimir Putin has rejected Volodymyr Zelensky's call for a meeting to end his invasion of Ukraine . Mr Zelensky summoned Mr Putin for face-to-face talks on Thursday in an extraordinary open letter. In it, the Ukrainian President called for a full ceasefire, said Russians were tiring of their leader's war, and warned that Mr Putin's economy was on its knees. And speaking last night, the Russian premier confirmed he had "taken a glance" at the note. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say "This morning, [Kremlin spin doctor Dimitry] Peskov slipped the paper to me again. I glanced through it quickly," he said. Mr Putin went on to address the letter in detail - and refused to mention Mr Zelensky by name throughout. "First, the author of the letter mentioned my age," the Russian President, 72, bristled. "Well, what can I say? Of course, everyone should think about age. But it seems to me that plenty of political figures do their jobs at my age, and some are even older than I am." He then swiped at Mr Zelensky's failure to hold elections during the war. Ukraine was slated to finally announce a vote earlier this year - but that was derailed by months of Russian drone and missile attacks, which rendered a proper campaign impossible. "I noticed the point about how long someone has held elected office... You have to go to elections, not be afraid of them, and always act within the constitution," Mr Putin said. "Holding on to power outside the constitution is called usurpation of power. That is a criminal offence. So there is no need to be afraid. "Go to elections. I would advise everyone to do that. Especially since in Ukraine they were saying elections would be held soon, and then somehow everyone went quiet. It's not clear why." He went on to turn down Mr Zelensky's demand for a meeting. Pressed on whether he would meet Mr Zelensky, he said: "So far I see no point." He said he did not understand why Ukraine does not want to see Donald Trump's administration act as a guarantor for peace talks. "I am grateful to Donald, but there is some work to do," Mr Putin added. "Well, reliable guarantors never hurt. Of course they don't. But why the US administration and President Trump are being rejected in that role, I don't really understand. "They want weapons from the United States, but for some reason they don’t want the US administration and President Trump as guarantors. That raises questions." Then, finally, the 72-year-old turned his fire on Mr Zelensky's dress sense. "We all saw Donald, in front of the whole world, educating the author of this letter and pointing out the dress code. You understand? Constantly playing Rambo, First Blood, it may be appropriate somewhere. But not everywhere. Not everywhere." Responding to Mr Putin's comments, the Ukrainian President said his "weak" answers meant Russia was "choosing war again". "He simply does not want to end the war," Mr Zelensky added, saying Mr Putin "does not want to change anything and does not want to admit that his war is liked only by him and those who draw money from him".
