A petition to charge the officers who handcuffed Henry Nowak in his final moments has smashed past 160,000 signatures - and is continuing to climb. The appeal calls on the Crown Prosecution Service and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to charge the officers involved with manslaughter, criminal negligence and dereliction of duty. The petition also demands the full publication of the Independent Office for Police Conduct's report without any redactions designed to "protect the officers from scrutiny". The IOPC is carrying out an investigation into the full circumstances of Mr Nowak's murder in Southampton on December 3 last year, including whether "there may be misconduct on the part of any of the officers involved". TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say Last Monday, the university student's murderer Vickrum Digwa was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years behind bars after he stabbed the 18-year-old five times with a Sikh ceremonial blade. Police were initially called out to the scene where Digwa lied and said he had been racially abused by the teenager. Anger erupted after chilling bodycam footage captured Mr Nowak's repeatedly telling officers he had been stabbed and he was unable to breathe before he slipped out of consciousness. While the student was lying on the floor, one officer responded: "Don't think you have, mate." The 18-year-old had his hands forced behind his back and locked into handcuffs, lying face down while an officer read him his rights. Ever since Digwa's sentencing, anger has mounted over the state of Britain's policing system while the Home Office warned against feeding misinformation online. Last week, a police officer who was wrongly accused of being involved in Mr Nowak's arrest told GB News she received regular deaths threats due to misidentification. Christi Hill, who worked for Hampshire Police for 11 years, did not even work for the force at the time of the incident. People are trying to find my family or people that know me."It has been really tough to read the comments - it has been an absolute onslaught." Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, Ms Mahmood told MPs a male police officer had also been wrongly identified and has been taken into hiding. The Home Secretary said: "Misinformation and inflammatory commentary is making a dreadful situation even worse. "We must all, together, condemn it, and we must also allow the facts to be established to the appropriate investigations and the courts, and we must do so calmly and responsibly." Previously, IOPC engagement director Derrick Campbell said: "We are acutely aware of the public interest in this case. We would respectfully ask people to stop speculating on an ongoing live investigation. "This investigation is going to fully establish the circumstances of the case including whether there may be misconduct on the part of any of the officers involved. "The ongoing commentary about the evidence and speculation risks prejudicing any potential processes and preventing Henry Nowak’s family getting the answers they deserve." Cases are only referred to the CPS after police compile an investigation file with all the necessary evidence, which is handed over to a lawyer. Then, once the case is reviewed, a decision will be made over the realistic prospect of conviction and whether the charge is in the public interest.
