'It's not just a vehicle, it's a powerful idea' - Sheinbaum unveils nation's first homegrown EV

"Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum presented the Olinia, Mexico's first domestically developed electric vehicle, at an official ceremony in Saint Lucia on Sunday, framing the project as a symbol of national innovation and energy transition. Speaking before researchers, students, university representatives and federal officials, Sheinbaum said the project represented more than a car, considering it an innovative and technological development from Mexico. "Olinia is not just an electric vehicle. It is a simple idea, but very powerful," she stressed. The president explained that the name of the vehicle comes from the Nahuatl word for movement and symbolises the technological transformation that the country seeks to promote through projects developed by national talent. "'Olinia' is born precisely from that creative force that has accompanied Mexico throughout its history. It is a vehicle designed by the minds of young Mexicans for Mexico and for the world," said Sheinbaum. The compact urban vehicle was developed by Mexican engineers, scientists and young talents in coordination with public universities and research centres. Designed for short city trips, it seats up to six passengers and reaches an estimated maximum speed of 50 km/h. Its electric motor has an estimated lifespan of eight years and can be charged at any standard home or commercial outlet. The car's lightweight, minimalist design aims to reduce energy consumption and facilitate local production. The project includes different versions adapted to personal, family, and people with various disabilities' transportation needs, with an emphasis on its low maintenance cost. The estimated cost of the vehicle will be between 90,000 and 150,000 pesos (5,160 to 8,600 USD, 4,474 to 7,456 EUR). The president highlighted that the initiative aims to become a symbol of confidence in the country's capabilities and the potential of its new generations. "'Olinia' is the hope of a Mexico that recognises in its youth, the strength of its present and its future," concluded Sheinbaum. With the presentation of Olinia, the Mexican government seeks to position the country as a relevant player in the development of sustainable mobility technologies and advance towards an innovation model based on science, engineering, and national production."
