Yellow alert issued for Visayas grid on June 8

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) again issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Monday, June 8, as electricity supply in the island group remains inadequate. In its 8 a.m. advisory, the firm said the yellow alert would be in place between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand was estimated to hit 2,510 megawatts (MW) and available generation supply was at 2,659 MW. The NGCP said 23 plants were on forced outage in Visayas while 11 others were running on derated capacity, for a total of 881 MW unavailable to the grid. The yellow alert was issued anew because of the continued unavailability of major coal plants Therma Visayas Inc. Units 1 (169 MW) and 2 (169 MW), and the Panay Energy Development Corp.’s Unit 3 (150 MW), as well as expected high power demand in the afternoon. A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement, but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
