'Do not lose hope' - Keiko Fujimori claims 'technical tie' in Peru elex after quick count results released

"Presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, leader of Fuerza Popular and daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, asserted that there is not yet an official winner in Peru's election following the release of quick count results. "We are in a technical tie. So far, there is no winner in this contest. For this reason, it will be long days until we know. It would be irresponsible to define the result based on a sample, such as the quick count," she said on Sunday. She also called on supporters to remain calm and hopeful, emphasising that her party would accept the final result whatever it may be, and urging her opponents 'to do the same.' "Finally, I make a call to the international community to participate and stay vigilant until the last moment of this process. And as a final message, I want to tell the Peruvian people not to lose hope. We need calm and serenity and we are going to wait with great faith for the final result," she concluded. According to preliminary quick count figures from Datum Internacional, Juntos por el Peru candidate Roberto Sanchez is leading the race with 50.14% of votes, compared to 49.86% for Fujimori - a margin of just 0.28 percentage points. A similar result was reported by Ipsos, which attributes 50.3% of the vote to Sanchez and 49.7% to Fujimori. However, official preliminary results from ONPE - based on tally sheets processed as they arrive - show Fujimori leading with 52.6% of the vote, compared to 47.3% for Sanchez, with more than 92,000 records processed. 51-year-old Keiko Fujimori is the main figure of Fujimorism, a political movement founded by her father, former president Alberto Fujimori. She leads Fuerza Popular and is running for the presidency for the fourth time, having previously lost in the second round elections of 2011, 2016 and 2021. Fujimori's campaign has focused on restoring public order, tackling crime, maintaining economic stability and promoting private investment. Final official results and the proclamation of the winner of the presidential runoff are expected in mid-July, according to the National Jury of Elections (JNE). The inauguration is scheduled for July 28, 2026, Peru's Independence Day, when the elected president will begin a five-year term."
