Skyward prayers! Thailand's centuries-old rocket festival lights up Roi Et in bid for rain and rich harvests

"Dozens of participants gathered in Suwannaphum district of Thailand’s Roi Et Province on Sunday for the annual Bun Bang Fai rocket festival, a centuries-old tradition held to honour rain god Phaya Thaen to pray for abundant rainfall ahead of rice-planting season. Footage shows teams preparing decorated rockets, carrying them in processions through the town, and climbing launch platforms before performing prayers and launching them into the sky. “I've been living in Thailand for a long time, and I've been to a lot of these rocket festivals, but every one of them is different and unique,” said Adryel Talamantes, a US citizen living in Thailand. “They're just amazing, amazing events.” Talamantes described the Suwannaphum festival as a particularly significant celebration for local communities in the largely agricultural region. “It's the best thing that happens all year. I'll keep coming to these for the rest of my life because these are some of the best cultural festivals I've seen around the world.” The festival was accompanied by traditional music, drum performances and molam bands, with local communities celebrating one of the most important cultural events of the year in Thailand’s northeastern Isan region. Like other Bun Bang Fai celebrations across Isan, the festival is rooted in pre-Buddhist agrarian traditions and is held before the monsoon season. Participants launch homemade rockets as offerings to Phaya Thaen in the hope of securing favourable weather and a successful rice harvest. The celebration is also closely linked to local folklore, including the legendary tales of Phadaeng Nang Ai and the Toad King, which form part of the festival's cultural foundation. Suwannaphum is believed to have hosted the event continuously for more than 300 years. The rockets, traditionally made from bamboo and often reinforced with PVC tubes filled with black powder, are decorated using a distinctive paper-cutting technique unique to the local community."
