Sadiq Khan's insidious plan to bulldoze London's greenbelt is an insult to democracy

Labour loves telling voters they are wrong and behaving as though somehow democratic votes can be overturned when the outcome is not something they want. Nationally, the party is testing the waters with Brexit, although in London, an equally insidious attempt at power-grabbing is going on. Enfield is lucky to be run by the wonderful Alessandro Georgiou, a good friend and Conservative colleague of mine on the London Assembly. After years of campaigning in the borough, in May he pulled off a shock result, unseating Labour councillors across Enfield, with the Conservatives taking their place as the largest party there. That campaign was fought, however, on a crucial issue: defending London's greenbelt. Whilst Reform UK and Labour were all too keen to bulldoze our parks and green spaces, Alex and the Conservatives stood firm in their belief Crews Hill and Trent Park should be retained as vital green spaces for Londoners. But Labour has never let a thing like democracy stop them. Despite losing control of the council as a result of their disastrous support for these inappropriate construction schemes, the party is still out to bulldoze the parks. Even now, it looks like Sir Sadiq Khan, the Labour Mayor of London, might intervene to overrule Alex’s decisions to withdraw from the controversial “New Towns” scheme. The votes of thousands of Londoners will have meant nothing when their voices will have been silenced by bureaucrats in City Hall, to whom elections are only valid if they produce the results you want. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say If they can do it in Enfield, they will not stop there. Your local votes will become meaningless as faceless Labour apparatchiks and unpopular politicians use their powers to overrule you and subvert your wishes for your community. Today it is Trent Park. Tomorrow it might be Havering, Bromley, Croydon, Richmond or Harrow. No borough is safe from the expansive and pervasive powers of Sir Sadiq, who so desperately wants to turn every last park in this city into tower blocks and estates. A local vote must mean something and be respected by all – even those who lose as a result. The way to achieve development in London is to do it in conjunction with communities: choosing appropriate locations, putting forward cohesive and well-thought-out designs, and ensuring residents are onside – and consulted – throughout the process. It cannot be achieved by allowing our useless mayor, who never deigns to use his powers for anything good, to just pick up the phone and decide to tarmac over the park because his mates have been booted out of office. This is so typical of Sir Sadiq. He promised all of us green spaces were important when I battled him during the 2024 mayoral election and people believed him. And now, it does not even matter if you have voted against it. As we see in Enfield, the Mayor may just be around the corner, ready to tell you are wrong and push through plans anyway. It is a disgracend an insult to local democracy. Alex Georgiou has my full support in opposing Sir Sadiq's dictatorial overreach. I hope, for the sake of Enfield, Alex can face off the Mayor successfully... otherwise our local parks might be next. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
