Sophie White: It’s easier to skip to a funny meme than face stories of trauma, suicide and genocide, but it’s important for humanity to witness them

I’ve recently read two books that I have been unable to stop thinking about. The first is Deadly Silence: A Sister’s Battle To Uncover The Truth Behind The Murder Of Clodagh And Her Sons By Alan Hawe written by Clodagh Hawe’s sister, Jacqueline Connolly and the second is Things in Nature Merely Grow by Yiyun Li. Deadly Silence is, without question, one of the most harrowing books I have ever read, by a woman who has suffered unspeakable traumas. The “unspeakable” bit is the pertinent part, the very crux of the book because, of course, not speaking about trauma or mental illness or domestic violence or coercive control is the most damaging thing of all.
