MANILA, Philippines — Former Public Works secretary Manuel Bonoan underwent two procedures after he suffered a heart attack, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Friday. The former Cabinet member, 80, was transferred to The Medical City from the PNP General Hospital for a more intensive monitoring of his condition after his blood pressure spiked dangerously yet again during the supposed scheduled arraignment on Thursday, prompting his camp to request for hospital arrest. “A formal medical diagnosis will be forwarded to the Sandiganbayan. We will receive the full report Monday. He had two procedures this week to treat his heart attack,” Remulla told reporters in a text message. “[Secretary] Bonoan is not in the best of health. The department accedes to the wisdom of the courts. If we cannot handle it, then we will ask permission from the courts to transfer him to a more advanced facility like Medical City,” he said. At the hearing on Thursday, the Sandiganbayan said Bonoan had acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, carcinoma, prostate cancer, and spine pain. Bonoan, along with Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and three other DPWH officials, are accused of graft and plunder for their supposed multi-million kickbacks in anomalous flood-control projects.
