"Panic gripped an elementary school in Malita in the Philippines on Monday after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck, causing the roof of a shelter within the school compound to collapse just meters away from a gathering of students. Footage released by Mahayahay Elementary School shows teachers instructing students to stay low and cover their heads during the tremor, before the collapse triggered screams and panic among the children. According to school authorities, the incident occurred during a flag-raising ceremony, with no injuries reported at the time of publication. Meanwhile, the offshore earthquake struck the southern Philippines, killing at least 16 people, injuring more than 200, and damaging buildings across Mindanao island. A one-metre (three-foot) tsunami was also reported along nearby coasts. Search and rescue efforts have been conducted at damaged buildings in General Santos, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr had vowed not to 'leave Mindanao behind'. The tremor also triggered tsunamis off the coasts of Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Located on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', the Philippines is vulnerable to natural disasters like tropical storms, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes."
