Cebu ready to help Mindanao

CEBU CITY — Cebu’s provincial government has placed its emergency response units on alert and signaled readiness to extend assistance to Mindanao following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani on Monday, June 8. Governor Pamela Baricuatro directed the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to closely monitor developments and coordinate with disaster response counterparts in Cebu and affected areas in Mindanao as authorities continue to assess the impact of the quake. Baricuatro also instructed the PDRRMO to coordinate with disaster management authorities in General Santos City and other affected areas to determine possible support the province may extend. “In times like these, we are reminded that Filipinos are strongest when we stand together. Cebu stands ready to help our brothers and sisters in Mindanao,” the governor said. “I have also instructed our PDRRMO to reach out to the disaster management authorities in General Santos City and other affected areas to determine how the Province of Cebu may assist should help be needed,” she said. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck at 7:37 a.m. off the coast of Sarangani and prompted tsunami warnings across parts of Mindanao, with authorities ordering precautionary evacuations in several coastal provinces as a safety measure. National government agencies activated emergency protocols following the quake, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directing coordinated disaster response operations, prepositioning of relief supplies, and readiness of evacuation centers for affected communities. Initial reports from Mindanao indicated structural damage in parts of General Santos City and nearby areas, including reports of damaged buildings, schools, and other infrastructure. “While there are no reports of significant effects in Cebu at this time, I encourage all Cebuanos to remain vigilant, stay informed through official advisories, and be prepared for possible aftershocks,” she said.
