'Magical scene' – Vietnam’s Perfume River illuminates for spectacular Vesak Lantern Festival celebrating Buddha’s birth

"The historic Perfume River in Hue, central Vietnam, was transformed into a sea of golden light on Sunday as thousands of Buddhist devotees and tourists gathered for the annual Vesak Lantern Festival. Footage shows participants on the riverbanks and aboard traditional dragon boats, releasing thousands of glowing lotus lanterns onto the water under the theme 'Golden Light of the Dharma - Cultural Convergence, Spreading Peace', carrying messages of peace and wishes for national prosperity and well-being. "I was very impressed with the scale of the event. A large number of monks, nuns, Buddhists, Buddhist families, and international tourists participated. Thousands of lanterns were released onto the Perfume River, creating an incredibly luminous and magical scene, very characteristic of Hue during the Buddha's birthday season," shared participant Thanh Tam.

"Before releasing the lanterns, I prayed for peace and happiness for everyone in their homes. May all good wishes float away on the waters of the Perfume River," added Tuong Lam. The stunning display formed a breathtaking visual spectacle against the backdrop of the UNESCO-listed former imperial capital. This ritual allowed visitors to send personal prayers for prosperity and health while celebrating the region's rich Buddhist heritage. The Vesak Lantern Festival is a vibrant religious and cultural celebration where thousands of illuminated lanterns are lit to honour the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha. Celebrated nationwide, it blends spiritual reverence with cultural tourism."
